Southampton Hockey duo Alex Danson and Maddie Hinch, as well as the rest of Team England, are off to a flying start at this year's Commonwealth Games in Australia. 

Team England Hockey opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in this morning's Women's Pool A. 

Goals from Susannah Townsend and defender Grace Balsdon secured the opening win for England with goalkeeper Hinch providing three important saves. 

Hinch made two saves from open play as well as one from a penalty corner to ensure England finished with a clean sheet. 

Danson (pictured) is England's captain and plays in midfield.

England now top the group with Wales in second place. Both sides are due to play each other tomorrow and the game can be watched live on the BBC at 10.30 tomorrow morning. 

It was a winning start for Team England Netball as well with goalkeeper Geva Mentor, originally from Bournemouth, playing the opening 3 quarters as her side romped to a 74-28 win against Scotland. 

Mentor (GK) had a quiet time in the opening three quarters with three defensive rebounds, three contact penalties, as well as a couple of interceptions and deflections. 

Team England top Pool B following the win with New Zealand in second place. Mentor and her team-mates will now face Malawi tomorrow and can be viewed on the BBC at 9.32 am. 

Southampton-born David McBeath helped England to a Group 2 Match 2 win over Guyana, with 99 points to 40. McBeath won the first match 3-0 with relative ease, beating Shemar Britton 11-5, 11-5, 11-6. He then teamed with Paul Drinkhall against Britton and Nigel Bryan, again winning 3-0  (11-1, 11-7, 11-5). 

Team England have now won both their opening matches in Group 2, which also includes Ghana, and have no progressed to the next round.
