Newport went into this game having already picked up a big win off the pitch in the midweek.

Chairman Stuart Ross announced in a club statement that last minute negotiations with South Coast Leisure had earned Newport another year at St. George's Park.

Visitors Portland United went into this having suddenly been thrust into the title battle, as Moneyfields' 7 point lead at the top was reduced following a 2-2 draw with Team Solent. Gary Bailey's side were five points behind with a game in hand.

Lewis Whyton would score for Portland to put away the game's sole goal in the first half, securing 3 points for the Blues.

Newport's Gary Streeter, who was named as their player of the season beforehand, was outstanding again with vital saves to keep Newport in with a chance.

Moneyfields would secure a late 87th minute winner against Andover Town and maintain the 5 point gap. Portland must now face Team Solent midweek and could reduce the deficit down to 2 points before the season finale on Saturday.

However, there could be further twists to the tale as Moneyfields are currently appealing a potential 3 point deduction for fielding an ineligible player.
