Ryde Rowing Club hosted the opening regatta in the 2017 HDARA season on Saturday.

The day would be a battle of attrition with the usual calm start/finish area but challenging conditions out by the buoy turns.

The first exciting finish would be in the Masters' Over 40 Fours final, where Poole A narrowly beat Poole B and Itchen in a three way race to the line.

The men's Junior fours final would have a close finish as Bournemouth, rebranded now from Westover and Bournemouth, narrowly beat Itchen across the line. Their women's novice team would then miss out to Christchurch in a later final.

Uncomfortable weather conditions then made life difficult for the small boats, notably in the men's junior scull and junior pairs finals as key placings in the top three were decided because crews failed to complete the course.

Finishing on the course would eventually become impossible and the double sculls event was unable to take place due to the water on the course disappearing with the tide.

Video highlights of Shanklin regatta, from the Sunday, will follow tomorrow.
